Thanksgiving Getaways: Skip the Traffic, Take the Jet

Thanksgiving is the busiest travel week of the year in the United States. Highways clog, commercial terminals overflow, and weather delays stack up across the Northeast corridor. For travelers who would rather spend Thursday at the table than Wednesday in a departure lounge, private aviation removes the friction almost entirely.

Why Thanksgiving Is Made for Private Travel

The Wednesday before Thanksgiving and the Sunday after are the two most congested travel days on the American calendar. Private terminals (FBOs) sidestep the main terminal entirely. You arrive minutes before departure, board directly, and leave on your schedule, not an airline's.

A few things change the math:

- No security lines. Your bags travel with you, and there is no two-hour arrival window.

- Direct routing. Private aircraft fly point-to-point, including into smaller regional airports closer to your destination.

- Flexible departure. A weather hold on the airlines can ground thousands of passengers; a private crew can wait for a window or reposition around it.

Where Families Go for the Holiday

### Aspen & the Rockies

Thanksgiving often coincides with opening weekend at Colorado ski resorts. A private flight into Aspen/Pitkin County (ASE) or Eagle County (EGE) puts you on the mountain while the airlines are still de-icing in Denver.

### Florida & the Caribbean

Families chasing warmth head to South Florida, the Bahamas, and the Virgin Islands. Miami, Naples, and St. Barts all see a surge over the long weekend.

### New York & New England

The reverse flow, travelers returning home to family in the Northeast, is just as common. Private flights into Teterboro, White Plains, or regional New England airports keep the reunion on time.

How Early to Book

Thanksgiving is a peak demand period for charter aircraft. The best aircraft and crew availability go to travelers who confirm by mid-October. If your dates are fixed around the holiday, locking in the aircraft early gives you the widest choice of cabin class and the most predictable pricing.

A Note on the Return

The Sunday after Thanksgiving is the second-busiest travel day of the year. A private return lets you leave on your own timeline, often straight from a smaller airport that the airlines don't serve, and land close to home rather than connecting through a hub.

If the holiday table is worth flying for, it's worth flying without the lines.
